Psychosexual Therapy

Sexual difficulties can be difficult to talk about. Psychosexual therapy offers a supportive, safe and understanding place to explore sexual issues and the impact on your relationship/s. Common problems, which respond well to psychosexual therapy for individuals, and couples include,

  • Loss of desire and arousal difficulties
  • Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
  • Erectile dysfunctions including rapid and delayed ejaculation
  • Vaginismus
  • Orgasmic/anorgasmia difficulties
  • Sexual orientation concern
  • Sexual compulsive behaviours
  • Sexual phobias and aversion
  • Negotiating sexual needs in the relationship
  • Changes associated with the menopause

Initially there is an assessment to find out what the problem is and if there is any need for general relationship counselling or GP/medical interventions. The next step is history taking, resulting in a treatment plan designed for your particular needs. Psychosexual therapy is based on a cognitive / behavioural approach underpinned with making sense of and understanding your life experiences. It can also include psychosexual education, practical exercises at home and may involve the use of medication and aids to help.
